“Tall, Dark and Handsome” by Delbert McClinton and Self-Made Men + Dana

Rudolph Valentino.

LYRICS:

Mr. Smith
[Verse 1]
Ain t much shaking in a one-horse town
News travels fast when somethin good comes around
Saturday night they gon be laying it down
Mr. Smith and his band of renown

[Chorus]
Mr. Smith is back in town (Yeah, baby)
Mr. Smith is back in town
Heatin things up, coolin things down
Mr. Smith is back in town

[Verse 2]
Guy down at the service station said he bought two tickets last week
Turns out he can t use em and he s looking to let em go cheap
What say I buy em and you and me go steppin out
And find out what this Mr. Smith stuff is all about

[Chorus]
Mr. Smith is back in town (Here he comes now)
Mr. Smith is back in town (You know they goin be)
Heatin things up, coolin things down (That s what he s doin )
Mr. Smith is back in town

[Verse 3]
Now the joint was jumping and we were holding tight
Darcy danced holes in her shoes that night
When the band tried to stop, the people were yelling for more
The last thing I heard walking out the door:

[Outro]
Mr. Smith is back in town (Mr. Smith y all)
Mr. Smith is back in town (We gonna have some fun tonight)
Mr. Smith is back in town (Woah dance honey)
Mr. Smith is back in town (Aw I love this)
Heatin things up, coolin things down
Mr. Smith is back in town

Mr. Smith is back in town
Mr. Smith is back in town
Mr. Smith is back in town
Mr. Smith is back in town
Heatin things up, coolin things down
Mr. Smith is back in town

If I Hock My Guitar
[Verse 1]
I came up from Mississippi
With? a guitar full of songs
Thought? I was really something
Maybe I was wrong
Got to make some money
Got? to pay my dues
Cause? if I hock my guitar
How the hell am I supposed to play the blues?

[Verse 2]
Filled? out an application
For sweeping up the streets
They said I didn t qualify
I couldn t disagree
I? got to find something
Something I can use
If I hock my guitar
Aw, hell, man

[Bridge]
I can do without the honey or the sugar for my tea
These days I can do without a lot of things
My shark-skin suit and my Stacy Adams shoes
All I really want to do is play my blues

[Verse 3]
Had my last can of tuna
With some cold green beans
Not all that appetizing
But a man s got to eat
Up against the wall
Nothing left to lose
If I hock my guitar
How the hell am I supposed play the blues?

No Chicken On the Bone
[Verse 1]
Listen up everybody cause I ve got something to say
I might have fallen in love with a girl I just met today
I don t quite know how to feel
I can t believe she s real
Got me mumbling and stumbling around in a fuzzy haze

[Verse 2]
She makes pizza at the joint on the corner of Fifth and Main
I m going back down there, I m gonna ask her what s her name
Gonna tell her just how I feel
I can only hope that she ll
Maybe smile at me and say she feels the same

[Chorus 1]
My heart started pounding like a runaway train
Knees started knocking when she called my name
Ain t nothing never never, ever gonna be the same

[Verse 3]
She s the one that brightens up my day
The sun shines on her even when it rains
I d say it s plain to see
What s happening to me
I m a different man than I was yesterday

[Chorus 2]
She s the kind woman take away your breath
She s the kind of woman scare you have to death
She s the kind of woman don t leave no chicken on the bone

[Instrumental]

[Chorus 3]
She s the kind of woman take you way up high
She s the kind of woman set your world on fire
A woman like that, I just can t leave alone

[Chorus 2]
She s the kind woman take away your breath
She s the kind of woman scare you have to death
She s the kind of woman don t leave no chicken on the bone

Let’s Get Down Like We Used To
[Verse 1]
Hop up on this couch and bring that Smirnoff
Come? on, scooch on over next to me
We? might even wanna kick our shoes off
Laugh out loud and do just what we please

[Verse 2]
Number one, we don t take no phone calls
Number? two, there won t be no TV
Number? three, we tell em all to get lost
Girl, this night belong to you and me

[Chorus]
Let s? get down like we used to
Cook up somethin we can light a fuse to
Cop a groove we can bust a move to
Let s get down like we used to

[Verse 3]
I ll? make a batch of my famous margaritas
We ll get down on our hands and knees
We ll take turns takin goofy pictures
Send em out to all our friends on Christmas Eve

[Chorus]
Let s get down like we used to
Let s cook up somethin we can light a fuse to
Hit a lick old Bob can pick some blues to
Let s get down like we used to

[Outro]
Stay up all night long if we choose to
Let s get down like we used to
Let s get down like we used to

Gone to Mexico
[Verse 1]
Got to get away from the telephone
I don t want to hear it ring anymore
Mi vida loca is out of hand
I m off to be the solitary man

[Verse 2]
Take my guitar and a change of clothes
Leave the rest by the side of the road
Break these chains and fly away
To live and love another day

[Chorus]
I ll take my aching heart to a place I know
And soak it in the sun til it don t hurt anymore
A secret place, a little town I know
Tell em I ve gone to Mexico

[Verse 3]
There are a lot of things that you just can t do
But you ve got to have a dream or two
And when the sideshow gets you down
Sometimes it s good just to get out of town

[Chorus]
I ll take my aching heart to a place I know
And soak it in the sun til it don t hurt anymore
A secret place, a little town I know
Tell em I ve gone to Mexico

Lulu
[Verse 1]
Lulu s back in town, they say
Trailing bad juju along the way
Life s been a pleasure since she s been gone
I hope she don t stay around here too long

[Verse 2]
I find it funny that she s come back here
You know, I thought she d burned all her bridges when she left last year
Why don t you do us all a favor, honey, and just disappear
Why you wanna come back here?

[Chorus]
Lulu, you gotta go
Lulu, don t want you here no more
Lulu, let me be perfectly clear
I don t care where you go but you can t stay here

[Verse 3]
Life s tough enough as it is
I don t need you sticking your nose in my biz
Why don t you do it baby? Just be gone
Why you wanna come back here

[Chorus]
Lulu, you gotta go
Lulu, don t want you here no more
Lulu, let me be perfectly clear
I don t care where you go but you can t stay here

[Outro]
Lulu, you gotta go
Lulu, don t want you here no more
Lulu, let me be perfectly clear
You can go to hell but you can t stay here
Lulu, no we can t still be friends
Lulu, the hell are you talkin about?
Lulu, uh-uh no I m not gonna
You can t use my car

Loud Mouth
[Verse 1]
Gotta love you
Can t help but love you
But damned if you don t beat all
I hate to see you take a hit like that
But you know it s your own damn fault

[Verse 2]
Now I ve been thinking
Bout when you re drinking
That s when you drop the ball
You re not really a fool, you just act like one
And that just about says it all

[Bridge]
I remember
Last November
All the things you said
About making changes and turning pages
And living with less regret

[Verse 3]
I know it s tough
But you can t give up
Even if you have to crawl
You re not really a fool, you just act like one
And that just about says it all

Down in the Mouth
[Verse 1]
It s over
The? jig is up
She? told me she don t want to keep in touch
That s why I m down in the mouth
I got the blues

[Verse 2]
She? called me lazy
Said? \"You don t try
\"Now you can kiss your sugar mama goodbye\"
Love? stinks
That s why I got the blues

[Bridge]
Now if you wanna see what happens when a woman lies
Take a look at all of these tears I ve cried
It s? a hard way to go
That s why I got the blues

[Verse 3]
Well now, the one thing I don t understand
She made me think I was the only man
Then she goes and do somethin like this
That s why I got the blues

Ruby & Jules
[Verse 1]
When Jules walked into Ruby s last Saturday night
The? monkey on his back was lookin for a fight
It? was obvious that somebody d been yanking his chain
The look in his eyes he was completely deranged

[Verse 2]
He started lookin around the room and everybody s ass got tight
They? were dippin and divin out of his line of sight
Now? if Ruby hadn t been there, there d been hell to pay
Cause she s the only one can chase his demons away

[Chorus]
Ruby s? a gem, Jules is too
Like precious stones cut with precision tools
When yin and yang they rendezvous
It s amazing what a little bit of love can do

[Verse 3]
She? sat him down and said \"Now listen to me, fool
\"You know I love you, and I d do anything for you
\"But if you gotta act crazy, go off and do it by yourself
\" Cause honey, you re gettin it all over everybody else\"

[Chorus]
Ruby s a gem and Jules is too
Like precious stones cut with precision tools
When yin and yang they rendezvous
It s amazing what a little bit of love can do

[Instrumental]

[Chorus]
Ruby s a gem, Jules is too
Like precious stones cut with precision tools
When yin and yang they rendezvous
It s amazing what a little bit of love can do

Any Other Way
[Verse 1]
Just another lovely day
A? low-flying angel got in my way
She? tripped and fell, I fell as well
And now I m happy to say

[Verse 2]
She s with me every step I take
Peas? in a pod, we re a layer cake
Never? saw it coming
But I wouldn t have it any other way

[Bridge]
I? pinch myself to make sure I m not dreaming
She takes my breath away
And if it is a dream, I don t want to wake up
This is where I wanna stay

[Verse 3]
If? I could just find that place
No tomorrow, no yesterday
Just me and my baby
I wouldn t have it any other way

[Saxophone solo]

[Bridge]
I pinch myself to make sure I m not dreaming
She takes my breath away
And if it is a dream, I don t want to wake up
This is where I want to stay

[Verse 3]
If I could just find that place
No tomorrow, no yesterday
Just me and my baby
Wouldn t have it any other way
Me and my baby
Wouldn t have it any other way

A Fool Like Me
[Verse 1]
You ve been hanging around from the get-go
Honey,? we had some fun
But? now it s time for you to put on them shoes
And go back to where you came from
It s hard for me to be honest
But? honey‚ I m telling you the truth
With? what you ve got and what I m not
You could put it all to better use

[Chorus]
I? can t love somebody
Who would fall for a fool like me
A little sweetie-pie with stars in her eyes
Exactly what I don t need
If? you don t wanna get your heart broke
You oughta have enough sense to leave
Cause you don t want to be somebody
Who would fall for a fool like me

[Verse 2]
No‚ I don t want to meet your daddy
Your daddy‚ he don t want to meet me
I don t want to get caught
Pickin the fruit off of the family tree
You gonna thank me later
Honey, you wait and see
Cause you don t wanna be somebody
Who would fall for a fool like me

[Chorus]
I can t love somebody
Who would fall for a fool like me
A little sweetie-pie with stars in her eyes
Exactly what I don t need
If you don t wanna get your heart broke
You oughta have enough sense to leave
How can I love somebody
Who would fall for a fool like me?
No Honey, you don t wanna be somebody
Who would fall for a fool like me

Can’t Get Up
[Verse 1]
1963
Boy, you should ve seen me
1964
I was a dynamo
I boogied with the best
Put it to the test, for sure
But now I can t get up enough
To get down like I used to anymore

[Verse 2]
There gon come a day
When you gon have to choose
Get your shit together
Or go on playing the fool
No, you won t see it comin
But it s comin to get you for sure
And then you won t be gettin up
To get down like you used to anymore

[Verse 3]
You know, the more things change
The more they stay the same
Livin and dyin
Seem to be the name of the game
No, you won t see it comin
But it s comin to get you for sure
And then you won t be gettin up
To get down like you used to anymore

Temporarily Insane
[Verse 1]
Temporarily insane
Is? this life I live in vain
Sometime? I catch me talking to myself
Can anybody hear
These voices in my ear
Telling? me I m going down the drain

[Chorus]
I? used to have a mind
But now it s gone, gone‚ gone
Everything? I thought was right
Went wrong‚ wrong‚ wrong
Sometimes I like to just go out walking in the rain
Could this mean I m temporarily insane?

[Verse 2]
Temporarily? insane
Fooled me once again
I never should have taken my advice
When push comes to shove
Too much ain t enough
Somebody s gonna have to pay the price

[Chorus]
I used to have a mind
But now it s gone, gone, gone
Everything I thought was right
Went wrong
Sometimes I like to just go out walking in the rain
Could it be I m temporarily insane?

[Verse 3]
Temporarily insane
I go back there now and then
And rummage through the ashes and decay
I bump into myself
And I cried out for help
But I smiled‚ shook my head, walked away

[Chorus]
I used to have a mind
But now it s gone, gone‚ gone
Some things I thought were right
Went wrong, wrong, wrong
Sometimes I like to just go walking in the rain
Could it be, I m temporarily insane?

A Poem
I was born and raised in Texas
But? I ve been a lot of places
Some? things seem to always stay the same
They all got local heroes
Followed round by local zeros
Lookin ? for their claim to fame
Fueled? by chemical consumption
No sense of compunction
Just? a-wallow in the mess they made
They find in their confusion
It was all just an illusion
They grind their teeth and watch the colors fade
