LYRICS:

MUSIC AND WORDS – Epic Fantasy Novel, Epic Rock CD

Since I began writing stories, I’ve been influenced by music: Rush, Kansas., Styx, Pink Floyd, the Alan Parsons Project, and more recently Dream Theater, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Lana Lane, Rocket Scientists, and more. Many stories, scenes, even entire books were inspired by my CDs. And then I discovered that a lot of the music I enjoyed was in turn influenced by science fiction and fantasy. The audiences had a lot in common.
In 2007, as I began work on the first TERRA INCOGNITA novel – an epic fantasy about sailing ships, sea serpents, and crusades – Shawn Gordon at ProgRock Records got in touch with me because he enjoyed my writing.  He introduced me to a wave of new music on his label.
It seemed natural for me to suggest developing a book/CD crossover project—an epic novel and an epic CD, written by the same author. Shawn agreed and brought aboard accomplished keyboardist/composer Erik Norlander (Rocket Scientists) to write the music and produce the recordings. I adapted a storyline from my novel, The Edge of the World, to music. With my wife and frequent coauthor Rebecca Moesta, I wrote the lyrics to all the songs. Our vocalists and musicians are some of the top names in the business, artists whose work I have long admired.
I’ve had over a hundred books published, in many languages, with dozens of bestsellers, but this project is a dream come true, a creative synergy unlike anything else in my career. Listen to the music, read the novel. And enjoy.

1. ISHALEM
Lyrics: Kevin J. Anderson & Rebecca Moesta
Music: Erik Norlander
Vocals: James LaBrie, Lana Lane, Michael Sadler, John Payne

Two continents - Tierra and Uraba - are connected by a thin isthmus of land. Two religions crowd together in a city that both consider sacred: Ishalem. After ages of friction and resentment, at last
the leaders of Tierra and Uraba come to the holy city to sign a treaty that will guarantee peace. But an accidental fire begins during the celebrations… and Ishalem is consumed in the inferno. Each side blames the other, and swords are raised.

Ishalem, Ishalem, Ishalem

Ancient city of legends and hope,
Ship upon a lost shore,
Sacred faiths tied to one another;
Strain against each other.
Walls enclose and yet divide.

Sow the gold of glory,
Feed the fires of faith,
Claim the heart, the heart of truth,
Reap the harvest of hate.
Ishalem, Ishalem, Ishalem

Streets are scoured clean by salty winds
Windows glitter like colored gems,
Turrets sparkle with gold,
Canals like silver ribbons.
Lead us to the heart of all.

Sow the gold of glory,
Feed the fires of faith,
Claim the heart, the heart of truth,
Reap the harvest of hate.

Pilgrims journey to behold you,
Home of wisdom, pure and true,
Even eagles flying high,
They can't see all your majesty.

Towers rise beside the sea,
Standing guard against our foes.
No merchant can buy you.
No scholar can know you.
No priest can bend your will;
No…
Sow the gold of glory,
Feed the fires of faith,
Claim the heart, the heart of truth,
Reap the harvest of hate.

A careless spark and ready blame
Consume the ancient walls in flame.

And so the war begins…

2. THE CALL OF THE SEA
Lyrics: Kevin J. Anderson & Rebecca Moesta
Music: Erik Norlander
Vocals: Michael Sadler, Lana Lane, John Payne

At the seacoast village of Windcatch in Tierra, far from the outbreak of war, the young sailor Criston Vora looks to the sea, dreaming about what lies beyond the horizon, the unexplored places on the map that no man has ever seen. He has heard tales from other seamen, listens eagerly as Captain Andon Shay calls for volunteers to join a great voyage of discovery aboard his ship, the Luminara. Though this means leaving his young wife, Adrea, Criston feels the inexorable call of the sea. Adrea knows she cannot deny her husband this dream and promises she will slay strong and wait for him until he comes back from his long voyage. Before Criston sails away on the Luminara, she gives him a lock of her hair to keep with him at all times.

Criston
What’s out there to explore?
I really need to know.
I dream of golden shores –
that's why I long to go.
And all I'll miss is you.
While every day it calls to me,
The Song of the Sea.

Adrea
Oceans are wide, wide as my heart,
Hearts hold dreams –
Now follow yours.
While we're apart I'll dream of you.
Let the waves of your dreams
carry you away,
Then back home to me

Criston
I yearn to see it all,
Each wonder lo behold.
I must obey the call.
That echoes in my soul.
And all I'll miss is you.
And every day it calls to me,
The Song of the Sea.

Adrea
Oceans are wide, wide as my heart,
Hearts hold dreams –
Now follow yours.
While we're apart I'll dream of you
Our dreams will keep you
close to me, As you sail on the sea.

Captain Shay
All that you long for is out there
Treasure, adventure, and fame.
Lorelei maidens with gold hair
Already calling your name.

So drink in a breath of the fine
salty breeze,
The scent of a rainbow, and
ambergris.
Come sec the wonders with your
Very own eye –
when you reach the edge of the
world, You can fly.

Criston
There's magic in each tide,
A spell upon the sea.
Beyond where charts can guide,
A new world waits for me.
And all I'll miss is you.

Adrea
Oceans are wide, wide as my heart,
Hearts hold dreams,
I'll dream of you. . . .

The wind will blow your love to me in the song of the sea.

3. I AM THE POINT
Lyrics: Kevin J. Anderson & Rebecca Moesta
Music: Erik Norlander
Vocals: James LaBrie

After the destruction of Ishalem, Soldan-Shah Omra, the leader of Uraba, faces the rage of his people who call for a crusade against their mortal enemies, the Tierrans. His advisers demand that he take immediate action. But Omra knows that the bloodshed will be terrible, and the war will undoubtedly last for many years. This is not a decision to be made lightly; nevertheless, the decision is his alone.

I am the point.
I am the voice.
I am the point. . . .

I hear the crowds cheer,
I can taste their fear,
I see them look up to me,
The people believe in me,
I know what they want from me.

I –
I am the point –
The point of their lives,
Their lives of desperation.
I am the point

I hear your advice.
But I roll the dice,
I feel all your wants and needs,
I've seen what resentment breeds,
I know what you want from me

I –
I am the point –
The point of your view,
Your view of the world.
I am the point—
The point of no return

Am I wrong, am I right –
To lake up the fight?
I let no one choose for me,
I'm seizing my Destiny,
I know what I have to be.

I –
I am the point –
The point of the sword,
The sword that rules the world.

I –
I am your lord.
I am your voice.
I am the One.
I am the point!

4. LETTERS IN A BOTTLE
Lyrics: Kevin J. Anderson & Rebecca Moesta
Music: Erik Norlander
Vocals: Michael Sadler

As the Luminara sails off to parts unknown, Criston sees the wonders of the world, but he cannot forget Andrea. True to his promise, Criston writes her a love letter, rolls it tightly with a strand of hair from the lock she gave him and seals it in an empty bottle given to hem by the ship cook… he throws the letter overboard, hoping that the currents will carry the bottle to her across the sea.

On paper, my words,
My thoughts, my love,
I write for your eyes alone.
The ink is smeared with a tear, My Love,
My heart is lost without you.

Sealed in a bottle,
Trusted to the sea,
Borne on the waves that surround me,
May the currents and the tides
Be merciful guides
And bring this letter to you.

As winds on these dark seas take me far
I make a wish upon a star,
And hope and I pray
These words will find their way,
You'll read this letter from me.

Sealed in a bottle,
Trusted to the sea,
Borne on the waves that surround me,
May the currents and the tides
Be merciful guides
And bring this letter to you.

With a strand of your golden hair,
My Love, may it find you there.
This page is filled with yearning,
All of my heart longs for you.

Though I sail beyond the horizon,
Though I hear the songs of tempting sirens,
Only one voice calls my heart,
Your love will bring me home
.
This paper holds a kiss, My Love,
My fondest dreams, my bliss,
And all of my hopes and love, My Love,
In a letter I send to you.

5. HALFWAY
Lyrics: Kevin J. Anderson & Rebecca Moesta
Music: Erik Norlander
Vocals: Lana Lane

Back in her seaside village of Windcatch, Andrea tries to live her life without Criston, waiting for him to come home. He has been gone for months now, facing unknown dangers. To outside observers Andrea’s daily routine appears to be the same. In her heart, though, life has fundamentally changed. She tries to do all the normal things, but even the simplest activities are different. While she remains home, Andrea feels that half of her is with Criston, far, far away.

I wake up each day,
As I did before.
I do the same things,
And I do them some more.
Seems like no one noticed
the change in my life.
It's the same ... but different.

My mind is only halfway here,
My heart is always halfway there,
Because my other half is otherwhere…
He's otherwhere. ...

My clothes are the same,
I haven't changed my hair,
I go to work and I try to care.
Why does no one, notice
 the change in my life?
It's the same ... but different.

My mind is only halfway here,
My heart is always halfway there,
Because my other half is otherwhere…
He's otherwhere. ...

Every hope that I had
Sailed with him that day,
And till he’s back at my side,
I've tucked my dreams away.

I walk the same streets,
And I greed my friends.
But my loneliness
 never seems to end.
How could no one notice
 this change in my life?
It's the same…but different.

My mind is only halfway here,
My heart is always halfway there,
Because my other half is otherwhere…
He's otherwhere...

This song is dedicated to the family members of military personnel serving overseas.

6. ANCHORED
Lyrics: Kevin J. Anderson & Rebecca Moesta
Music: Erik Norlander
Vocals: James LaBrie

As the Uraban armies prepare for war, Soldan-Shah Omra searches his soul, digs deep into his conscience, and knows that he must launch a raid upon the enemies of his faith. He draws strength from his beliefs, and finally all his doubts are extinguished, his questions answered. Choosing the first point of attack – a defenseless village named Windcatch on the coast of Tierra – Omra marches his soldiers to battle.

My faith is an anchor:
It holds me and steadies me,
Keeps me secure.
I believe, I believe.

In what God has shown,
In what prophets have known.
In words carved stone,
I believe, I believe.

No current too strong
Can pull me along,
Or weaken my song.
I believe, I believe.

Like light in a mirror,
It couldn't be clearer:
The truth draws me nearer.
I believe, I believe.

But those who refuse,
To honor our views,
What more can they lose,
If they don't believe – won't
believe?

Their faith is an anchor.
That drags them down
Until they drown
In the Truth.

I have been blessed
Above all the rest.
I have a new quest.
I believe, I believe.

My faith is an anchor:
It holds me and steadies me,
Keeps me secure.
I believe, I believe.

7. HERE BE MONSTERS
Lyrics: Kevin J. Anderson & Rebecca Moesta
Music: Erik Norlander
Vocals: John Payne, Michael Sadler, Lana Lane

As months pass and the Luminara continues its voyage to parts unknown, the call of the sea begins to fade for Criston. Instead of imagining wonders and marvelous places, the sailors mutter their superstitious fears. Captain Shay recalls the legend of the Leviathan, the greatest monster in all the world oceans. Despite these uncertainties, Criston holds to his dreams and he clings to his promise to Andrea.

Captain Shay
Here be monsters, dangerous reefs,
Krakens prowl the darkest deeps.
This is where Leviathan sleeps.

Ancient legends recognize
Ship and treasure, fool and wise –
These are all Leviathan’s prize.

Criston
Don’t know what’s below,
Don’t know what’s ahead,
Don’t know what’s out there,
But we sail to the edge –
The edge of the world.

Andrea’s voice
Steer the right course,
Let the compass guide,
You’ll find your way home in the end.

Captain Shay
Ships gleam gold as daylight breaks,
Gallant captains know the stakes,
Dreading when Leviathan wakes.

Bold explorers fearless roam,
Sailing on a path of foam,
Into old Leviathan home.

Criston
Don’t know what’s below,
Don’t know what’s ahead,
Don’t know what’s out there,
But we sail to the edge –
The edge of the world.

Andrea’s voice
Steer the right course,
Let the compass guide,
You’ll find your way home in the end.

Captain Shay
Unknown seas on empty maps,
Stirring serpents… thunder claps –
Beware of Leviathan’s traps.

Thick clouds rise, as black as hate,
Warning of a stormy fate,
If we pass Leviathan’s gate.

Criston
Don’t know what’s below,
Don’t know what’s ahead,
Don’t know what’s out there,
But we sail to the edge –
The edge of the world.

Andrea’s voice
Steer the right course,
Let the compass guide,
When you reach the edge
of the world,
You can fly…

8. THE SINKING OF THE LUMINARA
Music: Erik Norlander

As the winds pick up and the waters grow dark, lookouts aboard the Luminara spot distant sea serpents. A gathering storm churns the seas, tossing the ship from side to side. Then a crack of lightning illuminates a huge scaled form, a monster with tentacles and fangs, and a maw large enough to destroy ships—the Leviathan! Captain Shay orders the men to fight while he defiantly tries to skewer the monster's eye with a harpoon, but the Leviathan attacks with a vengeance, devouring the captain, smashing the hull breaking the masts. Swept overboard with the wreckage,   Criston clings to a broken spar as the storm winds drive him away    … and he watches the Luminara sink, with all hands lost.

9. THE WINDS OF WAR
Lyrics: Kevin J. Anderson & Rebecca Moesta
Music: Erik Norlander

On a bright morning, as the fishermen set out to sea, Andrea goes down to the village docks to begin her day’s work. Out on the water, she sees ominous ships – Uraban raiding vessels filled with angry soldiers – converging on Windcatch. Though they are far from the holy city of Ishalem, Andrea and her fellow townspeople find themselves caught in the winds of war. As the alarm bell clangs from the small church on the hill, the villagers scramble to defend themselves. Soldan-Shah Omra leads his men in a slaughter, burning the homes and shops, massacring the people of Windcatch. Cornered, Andrea tries to fight Omra himself, but she is captured and taken away from her burning village, as a prisoner of the soldan-shah.

It was a day like any other:
Morning with blue skies.
And then the storm came,
And then the world
Changed –
How can you stop a flame
Blown by the winds of war?

Why did they come here?
What did we do?
Why do they hate us?
What can we do?
Torn by the winds of war.

It was a day like any other.
The battle once far away,
We see now first-hand,
And like a firebrand,
It consumes our land,
Fanned by the winds of war.

Why did they come here?
What did we do?
Why do they hate us?
What can we do?
Torn by the winds of war.

With fire and fury,
With malice and hate,
They burn and they pillage,
They murder and rape.
Flashing their swords,
They carve out our fate.
We are the spoils of war.

It was a day like any other:
Sunset with red skies,
The storm has awoken,
Our spirits are broken –
What more can be spokenabove the winds of war?

Why did they come here?
What did we do?
Why do they hate us?
What can we do?

It was a day like any other,
And the end of our world.
We are the spoils of war.

10. SWEPT AWAY
Lyrics: Kevin J. Anderson & Rebecca Moesta
Music: Erik Norlander
Additional melodies: Rebecca Moesta
Vocals: Lana Lane, Michael Sadler

Adrea is carried with other Windcatch prisoners past the burned ruins of  Ishalem into Uraba. They are led overland on a long trek until they finally reach the Uraban capital city, where is forced to make a new life for herself, a slave to the soldan-shah in his palace. Trapped in a strange land, Adrea fears she will never be able to go back home to her beloved Criston.
Meanwhile, Criston survives great tribulations adrift in the wreckage of Luminara. Sea serpents circle his makeshift raft, but he clings to his need to get back home, to survive for Andrea’s sake. After many long ordeals, swept away on the ocean currents, he finally  encounters a whaling ship, and is taken aboard, rescued at last. He makes his way home to Windcatch – only to find that Adrea is gone.

Swept away, couldn't stay –
It all happened so quickly,
Cruel hate, cruel fate,
That took me from our world.

Well I don't know where you are,
But my heart is never far
Away from you.

Tempest force, blown off
Course –
It all happened so quickly.
Ruined now, don't know how
You’ll ever wait for me.

Though I don’t know where
You are
Still my thoughts are never far
Away from you.

We’re apart,
But in my heart,
I’m simply swept away.

I’ll dream of you,
Long for you,
But time goes by so slowly.

End of rope, dare I hope
That love will find a way?

Now I don’t know where
You are
But my hopes
And dreams
And love
are never far
Away from you.
How can I bear another day
Away from you?

11. BEYOND THE HOW
Lyrics: Rebecca Moesta & Kevin J. Anderson
Music: Erik Norlander
Additional melodies: Rebecca Moesta
Vocals: Michael Sadler

The Uraban raiders are long gone, the war now far away, and the people of Windcatch try to rebuild. Criston is there, alone, and his home no longer feels the same without Andrea. He fears he will never see her again, but he forces away his despair. He will continue to search for her, and he will push on with his life, knowing that she’s lost somewhere beyond the horizon.

Can’t fill this hollow
With a swallow of wine.
No more bleakness,
It’s a weakness to pine.

I need to find my destiny,
I'm searching for my destiny,
Beyond the horizon.

Light the darkness,
Banish the starkness of grief.
Rescue ragged
Hope from a jagged dark reef.

I’ll sail to a new destiny,
I know I have a destiny.
Beyond the horizon.

She might be waiting there,
Oh, will I find her there,
Beyond the horizon?

Quench the sorrow,
My tomorrow is here.
Raise my eyes, and
My horizon is near.

I2. MERCIFUL TIDES/LETTERS IN A BOTTLE (REPRISE)
Lyrics: Kevin J. Anderson & Rebecca Moesta
Music: Erik Norlander
Vocals: Lana Lane

Far away, in the soldan-shah's palace, Adrea has given up hope of ever seeing her home again. She cherishes her memories of Criston, sure he believes she's dead, and wonders if he still thinks of her. She cannot escape from her new life. But one day she finds a bottle that has washed up onto the seashore. Adrea picks it up to discover that it contains one of Criston's love letters lo her. The merciful tides have brought it here to let her know that he still loves and remembers her, and she finds new hope.

On paper, your words, your thoughts, your love,
I read with a pleading heart.
The ink is smeared with a tear, My Love,
For my life was lost without you.

Sealed in a bottle, a gift from the sea,
Borne on the waves from you to me.
Ah, the currents and tides
Were merciful guides,
To bring your letter to me.

As winds on dark seas took you far,
I made a wish upon a star,
And hoped and prayed
That you'd find a way,
To show you remember me.

Sealed in a bottle, a gift from the sea,
Borne on the waves from you lo me.
Ah, the currents and tides
Were merciful guides,
To bring your letter to me.

Though I may have been taken far,
To strange lands under distant stars,
I read your note with yearning,
And all my heart longs for you.

Though I'm lost beyond the horizon,
Like I'm stranded on a desert island,
Let my warm voice call your heart.
Let my love bring you to me.

Your warm embrace I miss, My Love,
But this paper holds your kiss.
I feel all our hopes and love, My Love,
In a letter you sent to me.
